Welcome to Superwomen in Wellness, where we sit down with inspiring female leaders paving the way in the wellness space.

We chatted with Justine Patterson, Founder & CEO of Hereditary Studio. Justine gave us an inside look at her daily practices that range from gratitude journaling to mindful movement, as well as opening up about her relationship with her skin. She shares how she strikes a balance between body, mind, and building her passions into a business.

Where do you live and what’s your favorite mode of expression?

Recently, my favourite modes of expression have been writing beauty recipes and thought pieces for the Hereditary Studio blog and website and formulating plant- based skin-care essentials aimed at promoting simple practices of self-care.

Do you have any wellness rituals? What are they?

For me, staying well entails stepping into my power and finding a balance that suits me and my body is key to achieving optimal health and overall well-being.

A daily ritual that keeps me balanced is mindful movement. Whether it be yoga, pilates, an outdoor run, or more vigorous activity, such as strength training, I find exercise always increases my energy levels and stimulates my mood. Breath-work is another ritual that I find to be extremely nourishing and healing for my body. Finally, meditation is a technique I use to encourage a heightened state of awareness, focused attention, and cognitive well-being throughout the day.

How does your day typically begin?

I begin a typical morning by practicing present-moment gratitude, which involves reflecting and writing down 3 to 5 things I’m grateful for in my gratitude journal.

This small daily practice gently reprograms my brain with positive information and sets the intention for the rest of my day. Journaling is accompanied by a bit of music and a stimulating essential oil blend to ease into the rest of the morning. I cherish slow mornings, and waking up to instrumentals evokes a sense of intuitive understanding, awareness, and insight. When my mornings begin like this, the rest of the day seems to flow smoothly, and I am far more likely to have a balanced, centered day.

What are your current self-care routines and how do you nourish yourself?

Self-care routines provide me with a sense of stability, balance, peace, and grounding. I believe that when you carve out simple moments of self-care that spark big joy emotionally, physically and mentally, you allow your mind and body to relax and rejuvenate and reduce any symptoms of stress or invalidating emotions.

The way I nourish my mind and body comes in many forms, including eating a balanced whole food diet, saying kind words and making no judgments, practicing regular pauses, giving myself grace, practicing gratitude and reflection, living in the present, and prioritizing meaningful relationships among others.

What’s your most sacred time of day?

There’s something to be said about how sacred early mornings are. Before the sun comes up, everything is quiet, calm, and at peace because the world is still asleep. Every day, as I get up, I’m reminded of what a precious privilege it is for a new beginning to start again and enable me to breathe, to enjoy, and to love.

What’s your superpower?

My superpowers include loving hard, multitasking, resiliency, and having my boyfriend by my side, supporting me in all that I do. Together, we make magic!

What inspired you to create Hereditary Studio?

My desire to see a change in the busy, bustling, modern world where people stop for nothing has led me to the idea of starting Hereditary Studio two years ago. I’ve always wanted to create multi-tasking, high-quality refined beauty essentials as an antidote for neglected self-care, products that encourage slowing down, command a sense of calm, and foster mindfulness rooted in ritual.

My hope for Hereditary Studio is to help others take care of themselves so that they can, in turn, take on the world around them and feel comfortable in their skin throughout all aspects of their lives.

What has your relationship been like with your skin? How has it evolved through the years?

During my pre-adolescent years, I struggled with grasping what my skin was telling me, and I was not aware of what my skin needed. As a result, I would often overlook the root cause of my symptoms and over-exfoliate or overstimulate with harsh products, which led to damaging my skin barrier and stripping away the natural oils from my skin.

Like any other relationship, building a healthy connection with your skin takes years of nurturing, patience and compassion. As I started to lean inwards and focus on my skin, I learned to tune into its cues and respond appropriately. Over the years, I adequately addressed my skin concerns, whether combating hyperpigmentation, congestion, dealing with redness or not having that luminous glow.

Today, I take an integrated approach that benefits the way my skin looks and enhances the way I feel from the inside out. I believe our skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside our body, both physically and emotionally. So I like to imagine the approach I take as a longevity protocol for my skin — a regimen that includes topical and oral components that complement one another, giving my skin all the essential nutrients it needs.

What’s something special happening in your life right now that you’d be excited to share with our community?

Hereditary Studio. It’s been such a labour of love thus far, and I’m very eager to launch and share it with the world. It has been a joyful and meaningful journey that I will always treasure. I’m so excited to share what we’ve been working on over the last 24 months. I’m also enrolled in a Pilates teacher training program and will be certified in summer 2021.
